ABOUT NELSON MANDELA.
Nelson Rolihlaha Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mveso, a small town in the Umtata district of The Eastern Cape, South Africa. He received a primary school education at the localmission school where he was given the English name 'Nelson', he then went on and matriculated at Healdtown, a Wesleyan secondary school. Mandela became a militant anti-apartheid activist and was the leader of Umkonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress. In 1962 he was arrested near Howick in Kwa Zulu Natal, convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent 27 years in prison, most of them on Robben Island, a stones throw from Cape Town.
On the 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison and led the negotiations between the ANC and the National Party culminating in him being elected State President in 1994.
As a much respected and popular World Statesmen, affectionately called 'Madiba', he has received over 250 awards including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
Nelson Mandela sadly passed away on 05 December 2013.
